There are certain parts of our trip that I've really looked forward to and the Dampier Peninsular is one of those.
Our first stay was at Natures Hideaway at Middle Lagoon, 170km north of Broome. We followed the uncomfortable Cape Leveque road for around 135km's then turned off onto a track to the left and followed it for another 35km's. The track is narrow with stretches of soft sand and big dips but is less corrugated.
Middle lagoon is one of those picture perfect U-Shaped lagoons. The beach is white and its waters protected by a rock bar. We loved our five night stay at this little slice of paradise.
Our fishing was more successful here. We caught Whiting, Flathead and Dart off the beach. I managed to snag an unusual fish, if anyone knows what it is let me know...maybe a baby Barracuda?check out its teeth in the photo below). Ben also caught a Rock Cod in the creek, but it was a bit small. So we had fish for dinner most nights.

Around camp the kids climbed the trees, made all sorts of sculptures with bush clay (see Hannah's Boab tree below) and played cricket with the resident Aboriginal kids. We had a campfire every night and made a few Dampers in the camp oven.
Hannah sends a message to her school friends...."hey guys, this damper is so much better than our first attempt! See its not burnt and tastes great" We took some of Hannah's girlfriends camping before we left and our damper was disastrous!
One night we drove up a track that took us along the cliff tops and found a nice spot to view the sunset. Look at Hannah's reading spot!
GO Hannah! Now that's camping on the beach!
The kids enjoyed snorkeling around the point, with Mum and Dad scrambling over the rocks keeping a close lookout.....
Traci the Aboriginal owner of the park came over the morning we left and gave us some lovely apple crumble to take away. It was such a sweet treat. So very relaxed and refreshed we waved goodbye to Middle Lagoon not actually sure where we were going to stop next.......

ReplyDeleteThe fish is a Long Tom. Its full name maybe Warroora Long Tom based on the photo. You can eat them but from memory they are full of bones. I am sure some where on the net you will find the best way to cook them.
The photos and the places you guys have been going are tops.
Happy travels looking forward to the next post.
